We are constantly being manipulated by the media that surrounds us: phones, computers, TV, movies, billboards, magazines and newspapers. Many of us think that we are immune to these influences, but are we really? What clothes do you wear? What foods do you eat? Why?? As consumers and citizens, it's important that we read the media with a critical eye. Look around you and be critical of yourself. Your blog response should be thoughtful and answer the following:
Where have you been manipulated by the media? Where do you see others being manipulated by the media? For this week, you need to not only respond to this blog, but also to comment on at least one other post by your peers.

One way that I am being influenced by the media is on billboards they are convincing me to buy their product or join their membership. Also, on commercials they are influencing you to buy their product because it is so much better than all the other products. They are always making you spend your money on the product because they are so convincing about it. When you get the product its not even as good as it seems and you just wasted your money on something so worthless.

I agree with you Sydney. I hate it when a commercial advertises a product and they say it's the greatest thing ever made. Then you buy it and it was a complete waste of money.

One place I have been manipulated by the media is I guess nowhere, I am kind of a picky eater and don't use to many electronics, besides maybe TV, I would have probably wanted one of those Play-Doh ice cream makers. One place others have been manipulated is the phones, mainly getting the iPhone 6 even though you already have the iPhone 5S

One time I was manipulated by the media from a football jersey website. I was customizing a jersey that had my name and number on the back. Once it delivered it had the wrong number and it spelled my name wrong. Also sometimes on social media people try to make others try to not like someone that they don't like. That is when i was manipulated and others getting manipulated.

I have been manipulated by the media in the football pads I by. My team gives you all the pads you need but they did not look good to me so i got under armor ones. Cost about $50 as oppose to the free ones I could have gotten. I see others being manipulated by the media by buying video games. They by about $300 consoles because they come with two or three games. Then they buy lots of $50-$60 games. In the end they spend about $800 total.

Manipulations are all around us. I've been manipulated watching TV, driving past billboards, playing games when ads pop up, and even by my teachers. One big manipulation in the media is to play Game of War. They use many aspects of the game to try to grab the attention of players. Other people are being manipulated by this game, other games, fast food places, which movies to see, where to go, when to go, and many more manipulations.

In my life there are many times I have been manipulated by the media. All the billboards and commercials that I see in my every day life like the ones for restaurants or clothing stores. Once you buy it, it looks much different then in the commercials. Many others are manipulated in commercials talking about insurance. But when they purchase it it doesn't cover what they need or in the commercial they stretched the truth. Clearly people get manipulated in their life.

The media--especially television commercials--has manipulated me many times. It does influence what foods I want to try. When I was 11, I wanted to try the Big Mac burger from McDonalds. I finally got to try the legendary burger of fast food. It looked like trash compared to the picture. I have also seen people being manipulated. One example is that the Christmas commercials are like three months early. In the beginning of September is now when winter and the holidays start . Leaves are the new snowflakes! People feel like they have to start preparing for Christmas so early, because other people are doing it.

People get manipulated by the media all the time. An example of where I have been manipulated is when I see pictures of the food I'm ordering at a restaurant, I expect the food to look like the picture and taste good. But that's not always the case. Other people can easily get manipulated by the media when they watch a commercial for an energy drink for example. The commercial says you will have lots of energy and be strong or fast if you drink their product.

I agree with you, Khani. On advertisements, many people think "Oh, that food looks amazing!" Take Red Lobster for example. In their commercial, they show the butter being brushed on perfectly, and the lobster getting tossed in the air with butter and juice dripping from all sides. But like you said, this is not always the case, and when customers get their food, it is mostly overlooked and unappetizing.

I agree with you Khani, about how restaurant menus make the food in the pictures look delicious, but then when it's actually served its not as perfect as the one in the photo. I once ordered a steak at ruby Tuesday's and it looked super juicy and yummy on the menu. But when I got it, it was dry and not juicy at all. I also agree with you about how you will drink a certain beverage or eat a certain food and you will have lots of energy or be really strong for a certain amount of time. One time I was eating a power bar and it said that you'll have lots of energy for the whole entire day. But it barely gave me any energy in one hour. Those are some reasons why I agree with you.

I have been manipulated by the media in many ways. One way I have been manipulated is when I buy food. Sometimes I buy more expensive name brand things because the commercials say they taste better, when really they taste the same. Other people also get manipulated by the media. When there are commercials for soft toilet paper people get that because they think it is better. But really it just makes your toilet more likely to clog.

I think other people can be manipulated my the media into buying something expensive that has the same quality as something much cheaper. For example, a costly jacket could be the same quality as a cheap jacket sold somewhere else and you just wasted your money. Also, to make you buy something, an ad could say something like "these shoes will help you jump super high" when the shoes are totally normal. I remember being manipulated by a Nutella commercial when I was little, which said Nutella was healthy for you. I quickly told my mom as an effort to get her to buy it, but later a friend told me the people who make Nutella could be in trouble because they claimed it was healthy in that commercial and it really wasn't. To this day I'm not sure if the Nutella brand actually ended up in trouble, but I clearly remember that incident from years ago.

I agree Anna, when a certain pair of clothing does something "special" but it really doesn't. I used to have a pair of Skechers and they said that it would help you run faster. But clearly it didn't do anything at all. It was just normal everyday life shoes.

Everybody, including me, get manipulated by the media at some point. For example, when I wear sports clothes like Nike, I wear Nike because in the adds, they show all the most famous sports stars training in Nike gear. When people become bias, it is usually because of adds on TV, mostly. Some adds include adds for new movie releases. The adds are usually put for age appropriate, so most PG-13 movies are put on the channels watched by teens. PG movies are advertised on channels like NIck or Cartoon Network. Most important of all, we should not listen to bias in the media, and not change our opinion because of it.

Commercials manipulate the media by emphasizing stereotypes. For example, in most commercials for house cleaning products, women are usually the ones who are cleaning. However, these commercials stereotype the women as the house cleaners, when some of them have outside careers. Another example is that commercials also emphasize stereotypes by showing little girls who play with dolls. Not all girls are girly, some grow up to be a tomboy. Lastly, some commercials emphasize stereotypes by showing a family with a father, a mother, and children. But not all families have a mother and a father and siblings. Like me, in my family there is only me and my mom. I don't have any siblings or a father. Also a friend of mine, doesn't have a dad either. But she does have 2 moms. Those are some examples of how commercials can stereotype things that are not always true.

Many people in this world get manipulated by the media. Take commercials for example. LeBron James, one of the best players in the NBA, stars in a McDonalds commercial. When people watch this, they think, "If LeBron eats there, so can I!" Since LeBron is very famous, people trust him in many ways. Even though McDonalds isn't very healthy, people will want to eat there because LeBron was in their commercial. This example is for others being manipulated by the media. I have been manipulated by the media by watching a SkyBall commercial. The advertiser said, "This ball goes up to 125 feet!" Later that day, when my mom and I went to the store, she let me buy it. When I hit it with my baseball bat, and also bounced it, it only went about 60 feet in the sky.

Many people get manipulated by the media. For instance, my sister has ordered clothes online and they look pretty in the pictures, but when they get delivered they don't turn out how the pictures showed they would look. Also, many people go to an ice cream truck and order something that's supposed to look like animal or a character from a movie but, when they get it looks like a blob of colors.

I think people can get manipulated to the media a lot. For instance apple makes it seem like there phones are so good. I think they are good phones but other androids can do the same thing if not better.Everybody basically has Iphones and say its better than androids, then other people want it because everybody else has it. The media manipulates you because everybody says its so good but they haven't tried out other phones.

People are always being manipulated by the media. One way that I am influenced is when I see a movie trailer I almost always want to see the movie, because It always shows the best scenes from the movie to hook you. One way that other people are influenced are the new tech and gadgets. The media are always show ads that show the new gaming system or new phone, which make people want to go out and just buy the item.

The media minipulates me in many ways. One way it does for example if I see an ad for a grocery store, and I see food, the food will always look perfect so I would want to buy it even if the food looks nothing like what the picture shows. I will want it because you think it looks like what the picture does because the media is manipulating me to believe that. Others can be minipulated by the media from television shows. If a famous television host such as Oprah tells people a book that's good to read, people will go out to buy it without even knowing what it's about, just because a famous person said it was good and told them to buy it. The book might be terrible, but people were manipulated by television to get it.

Also, magazines have manipulated many people into thinking that women actually are paper thin. Finally another way that media has manipulated people is by commercials, "by this and it will look nothing like the commercial" is what the commercial should say. There are lots of places that manipulate us as stated in the paragraph Mrs.Simons wrote. One of the places I think i have been manipulated id through TV. TV manipulates your mind by having you watch the program that you want to watch, and adding commercials. Think about it, would you have gone to red robin yesterday if you hadn't heard about it on TV? Would you have bough that Lunchable or Capri-Sun if you didn't see a commercial for it? If you really think you can find hundreds of ways the media id taking advantage of your subconscious.
