Consider a stereotype that has been applied to you, someone you know, or a character. What is that stereotype based on? Is it accurate? How do you/he/she/it fit or not fit that stereotype? Be thoughtful in your response, as these types of discussions can easily offend or upset someone!
Stereotypes are widely held but oversimplified images or ideas about a specific type of person. These beliefs are usually based on what someone looks like or the group he or she belongs to. Commonly held stereotypes about women or men, specific religions or ethnic backgrounds, or other generalizations often form our first impression of someone.

One stereotype is based on foreigner people. People in America first make judgements on a foreigner person that he or she is probably illiterate or poor. Not all people that come to the United States as immigrants are poor or illiterate. They might come here for business purposes or to make a better life. For instance, my dad is from India, and he didn’t come to America because he was poor or illiterate, he came here because his family was here and wanted a life full of opportunities for his family.

A lot of times people think that just because I'm a girl, I act and think a certain way. They think my favorite color is bubble gum pink, and they think girls like me talk in high-pitched voices. Other stereotypes that are associated with girls is that they all are awful at sports and all they care about is how there hair looks. People think girls say stuff like "OMG!" or "Totally!!" all the time. However, none of those stereotypes are entirely true. I like the color blue, over pink. I'm not awful at sports, and the world definitely doesn't revolve around what my hair looks like. Next time someone tells you you run like a girl or throw like a girl, take it as a compliment.

Yes. I think a lot of people think this because of tv. Tv does a really good job of making that realistic.

The whole discrimination against religion hurts my heart. I'm a different religion from most people, and everyone who knows, even my own sisters, give me weird looks and try to put me down. I feel pain in my heart every time a Muslim is shot, because who's to say it couldn't have been MY religion. People have to stop.

Some people think that social workers come to take their children away. Someone actually said to my mom when she worked in that field in a social situation something along the lines of “You’re a social worker? So you steal people's kids?” However, their main goal is to keep kids safe and with their families. They definitely do not want to take away people's children. Social workers also work in other fields, like in hospitals, resettling immigrants, helping seniors, as counselors, and more. My mom just happened to work with children.

I think one stereotype is that all gangs are bad. Indeed some are, but other gangs can be family who help each other out when they need it most. They don't have to sit in alleys waiting for someone to walk by to deal drugs or jump them. The bad gangs do that, the family gangs don't, unless they really have to. Some gangs can be friends in school! They don't do anything bad, they're just really good friends, like me, Trey, and Luca. We walk the halls in a triangle because we made up our own triangle gang. We're not a bad gang, just a friend gang who has nothing to do during our breaks. So yeah, don't stereotype gangs for being bad people, most aren't.

One stereotype I've heard is that women can't be President. People think this is true because there has never been a woman president before. Just because it has never happened, doesn't mean it never will. Women are equally as smart as men and they can do the same things. Even though it may seem like men have made a bigger impact in history and it may imply that women only stayed home and cleaned, a lot has changed and now women are given the same opportunities.

Here's the thing, nobody is telling women that they can't run for president. It's their option if they want to run. And Hillery was the only one who decided to. She was not elected because she had terrible ideas and she was a liar, not because she is a women. Also, keep in mind this is just my opinion.

They don't have to sit in alleys waiting for someone to walk by to deal drugs or jump them. The mean and "bad" gangs do that, the family or "good" gangs don't, unless they really have to. Some gangs can be friends in school! They don't do anything bad, they're just really good friends, like me, Nikki, Jakie. We stick together no matter what, and are always there for each other. We're not a bad gang, just a friends who hang out all the time like a gang. So yeah, don't stereotype gangs for being bad people because most are just groups of friends that like to hang out.

There is a lot of stereotypes revolving around dance, ballet in particular. A lot of people don't understand the discipline and challenge in dance. You need so much discipline and strength to be able to do what a lot of dancers can do and have. Many people don't think that dance and ballet is a sport, but I beg to differ. Dancing is one of the hardest sports out there. On top of that, many people got teased for it, especially boys. Other people will make fun of them because they are doing a "girls sport," but that is 100% not true. Boys are important hard to find in the dance world. They are important for partnering and male parts in ballets. I think people should start thinking about dance and ballet as a sport and stop teasing people for it.

Yeah, I hear that a lot that sports are strictly divided from girls and boys. Some girls could be better than boys and some boys could be better than girls.

A stereotype that makes my family and I feel bad is when people say all jamicans are loud. Or when they so oh she is screaming, she must be jamaican. That makes us feel bad like there is something wrong with us but there isn’t. We are amazing and nobody can change that.

A lot of people stereotype. One being that Muslims are bad people. They think that because some members of terrorist organizations are Muslims that all Muslims are bad, but that is not the case at all.

Im just randomly checking what's new in Mrs.Simon's class, although I'm in 8th grade. A stereotype I have witnessed is that all people who wear black are "Emo" or "Goth" I recently have been wearing black more often, but this is NOT because I'm Emo. Black just makes me feel better during the tough times I've been having. It makes me feel brave. I'm not trying to be a vampire fangirl, I'm trying to cope with stuff. I really hate the Goth stereotype nonsense. (Ps no offense to people who are actually goth, if anyone goth reads this)
