| Symbols add meaning to objects in our world. We find them in stories when a writer chooses to focus on some "thing" repeatedly. It could be Ponyboy's hair, a rare necklace, a lighthouse, a letter of the alphabet, an old baseball glove, or even just a color. As a society, we create symbols as a form of communication. And when we see these symbols, we instantly know the meaning attached to them- flags, brands, and even our text messages :) What is a symbol in your personal or public world? What is the meaning you or others attach to it? Explain... |

Something that is meaningful to me is a bracelet my grandma from Japan gave me. I barely get to see her because she lives so far away, so with the bracelet it's a part of her I get to keep with me. It symbolizes how we stay in touch and together throughout the years. She has cancer, so you never know what could happen. Wearing it gives me hope that next time I see her, she'll be healthy again.

A symbol that means a lot to me is one of my stuffed animals. It has a lot of meaning to me because I remember all the memories filled in it. I got it when i was about 3 years old and have had it ever since. It has a lot of meaning to me because it makes me remember my first trip to Florida and how I won it at a baseball game. Everytime I look at it, it makes me happy and brings joy to my heart,

A public symbol that is commonly used is a pumpkin. Around this time of year you will probably see pumpkins every where because it represents Halloween. Halloween has lots of symbols from witches to Frankensteins monster (The monster isn't actually called Frankenstein the creator is the monster doesn't have a name) but the most commonly used is a pumpkin.

In a lot of my favorite shows/movies/video games and whatnot, the characters have elemental powers. In-game, a flame or the color red will symbolize pyrokenesis (firepower) and the aggression a fire elemental possesses. A raindrop or the color blue will symbolize hydrokenesis (waterpower) and the calm, cool demeanor of water elementals. Even if you don't have elemental superpowers, bright red might make you think of fire and anger and blue of water and chillaxing.

There are a lot of symbols in the world to me one of the biggest symbols there is, is the breast cancer sign in fact it's so big they made a whole week of supporting it.The breast cancer sign to me is a sign of sadness because people get it and some die and some is a cancer serviver and when people are cancer survivors that puts a smile on my face. Anyways back to the symbol. So if a person wears the sign on let's say a shirt it mit mean they have or know or u did something to help then. And that's one of the symbol I see in the world.

A symbol I have noticed to be significant in our culture is the Apple logo. It represents, yes, the electronic company, but also it represents the way our personal technology is developing. Think of how recently the touch screen was invented. Now look at how often we use it today! It is truly a part of our daily lives. It also represents the trend that so many of us are slaves to, obsessed over the latest model of the iPhone or which style iPhone would give you the most data to make room for social media. When you see the Apple logo, you can't help but think, "2015" or "Technology" or "Cool" even when you aren't focused on that particular thing. I thought that the Apple logo is a great representation of our current unit. :-)

A symbol that means a lot to me is an elephant. Elephants are being hunted and killed for their ivory (tusks). The day I was born my mom's best friend gave me a stuff animal elephant that i still have to this day. When I was little I carried it everywhere to the grocery store to toy stores. It has so many memories in her and she always makes me smile:) One time I even left her at the grocery store and we had to come back the next day to get it and it was still in the same exact place that I left her.

One symbol that means something to me is a tree. For me, trees mean being calm. One reason for this is that one of my favorite things to do in the summer is climb trees. I like to sit in the tree and play my ipad and relax. This is why trees symbolize calmness for me.

A symbol that means a lot to me is a soccer ball. Soccer is my favorite sport because its helps me relieve my stress and its just really fun. A soccer ball for me represents that I'm athletic and that i love soccer. I started playing soccer in 4th grade. I would usually go up to Lemonye in the back field where no one ever plays and play with my friends. During the summer i would usually go 2-3 times a week for about 3-4 hours. Thats a symbol that represents me.

One symbol that relates to my live is the breast cancer ribbon. One of my parents friends who is also a woman I grew up around, was diagnosed with breast cancer about 2 years ago. She went through chemo and the cancer was announced gone. Recently we found out that she was diagnosed again. The breast cancer ribbon gives me and many others who are either going through cancer or know someone who has it, hope. This is a symbol that is very important to me and many others.

Two symbol that's relate to me is the Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic flag. They represent what my families history and the hard work that took them to get to were they are now. My Grandma on my moms side was born in the Dominican Republic with her 9 siblings and eventually after hard work her family moved into the US. And my Grandma on my dads side is from Puerto Rico and worked hard with her family to get to the US too. Soo the flags mean to me is how both sides of my family worked hard to get to where the are now.

A huge symbol of our nation is the American Flag. The 50 stars in the top left represent our 50 states as one nation. The 13 red and white stripes on the flag represent the original 13 colonies. The American flag is part of our lives everyday. A lot of people represent themselves with this symbol in honor of our country.

A symbol that is generally used is the American flag. When people think of the American flag, they think of patriotism. It reminds them of The United States where anything is possible and they can support their family. For many Americans, it means "the land of the free and home of the brave." Symbols can mean different things for different people: For Iraqis it could mean war.

A symbol that means something to me is a ladybug. It symbolizes my grandmother. A couple years ago she passed but she loved ladybugs so ever time I see one or one of my family members see a ladybug it reminds us of her. The ladybug gives us a symbol of remembrance of what she was like and sometimes brings back memories of her. Every time I see one it instantly makes me think of her and reminds me of the funny stories she used to tell us.

One symbol that is commonly seen throughout Winter is a Christmas tree. For me, it reminds me of a time of happiness and joy. I really enjoy the snow and the decorations during the holiday season. More importantly, the Christmas tree represents a time where my entire family, even my cousins from Georgia, gather in Syracuse. It's a great feeling to have your whole family together. Another thing that the Christmas tree represents a time of giving. Christmas a great time to give to those who are in need and brings a smile to someone's face.
