Please respond to the week's topic by Monday. Happy blogging!
Symbols add meaning to objects in our world. We find them in stories when a writer chooses to focus on some "thing" repeatedly. It could be Ponyboy's hair, a rare necklace, a lighthouse, a letter of the alphabet, an old baseball glove, or even just a color. As a society, we create symbols as a form of communication. And when we see these symbols, we instantly know the meaning attached to them- (flags, brands, and even our text messages :) What is a symbol in your personal or public world? Be sure to explain meaning your symbol and respond to others!

One of my top five favorite protagonists is Elphaba from the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Macguire. Many know her from the musical, but she was first cast in the book, which means, she was allowed much more complexity. I enjoyed every adventure with her as she sought out who she was in a world that refused to see past her "green" skin. She paved her own path, and led the way for others in the process. Then of course, along comes that nasty tornado that really shakes things up and casts her as the wicked one. Really? Maybe Dorothy shouldn't have taken the shoes in the first place... Five star character in my book! We all have favorite MAIN characters from books, movies, and television shows. What is it about these protagonists that makes them stand out? Comment about your favorite character and why he/she/it is so memorable. Please include the title of the text. This week's comments should be about a paragraph in length. | As we begin to wrap up and revise our poems and "This I Believe Essays," you will all have the opportunity to present your work to your peers. In terms of poetry, specifically, it's not always about what is on the paper, but how you present your work to an audience. Select ONE person (actor, politician, teacher etc.), and explain ONE characteristic that makes he or she an effective speaker. How does that characteristic make his or her speech engaging? Think about that person's body language, voice inflection, and their "so what?" |
At this time of year, we hear people talk about making RESOLUTIONS. A resolution is a vow to change something, to do or not do something, to change in the coming year with the purpose of making us "better" in some way. The tradition of making resolutions dates back thousands of years and spans across cultures and religions, so there must be something to this, yes? What is it about the beginning of a new year that gives us hope that we can be better than we are now? Ideas to ponder...So, with all this talk about resolutions, what are some of yours? Remember, a resolution is a made decision, something we are definitely going to do or not do. Something very different than an aspiration...So, what's it going to be? Please post and comment. Thanks! |
